The ghost pop band Bitter Party performs, reads, and discusses Ghost Pop, a book of stories that honors the unheard sounds that inspire the bands songs and pays tribute to spirits from distant times and places related to their personal and family history. The event will feature a sonic-gastronomical collaboration with food-based artist Genevieve Erin O’Brien.

Bitter Party is a Los-Angeles-based ghost pop band inspired by war-era music from Asia and the melancholy of life. Immersing themselves in the rich repertoire of folk, pop, and obscure tunes, their performance references the music in each of their pasts through dusty tapes, songbooks, vinyls, and YouTube channels. Bitter Party is comprised of Umi Hsu, Jacob Alden Sargent, Grace Umali, Nathan Lam Vuong, Linda Wei. For more information on the band, visit www.bitterparty.info.

Genevieve Erin O’Brien is a Queer Vietnamese/ Irish/German artist, community organizer, trainer, and cultural producer. O’Brien, once a butcher’s apprentice, is also a private chef and owner of sausage enterprise Meat My Friends (www.eatmeatmyfriends.com). The Critical Refugees Studies Collective of the University of California recently funded O’Brien’s current performance series Refugee Resistance Menu. For more information on Erin, visit www.erin-obrien.com.

“Animate the ghosts. Tune into kindred spirits. Dance to their heartbeats. Sing to soothe the anxieties from another time and place. We are the proud queer children of the postcolony… We listen to the ghosts and ask them to sing with us.” - Bitter Party
