Oxy Arts Initiate! recipients Sofia Benito '18, Kelly Kirkland '18, and Allison Wendt '18 present                       "GLITCH: An Electronic Music Workshop for Women and Non-Binary Folx".

Are you a feminine or non binary person interested in electronic music? Curious about the power dynamics involved? Have you ever been frustrated by or intimidated to participate in a male-dominated scene?

Join us for a 2 hour workshop featuring visiting artists White Boy Scream, Kora, and Maral!

At this workshop you will get the chance to:

  • meet three local artists and learn about their approaches to music-making

  • play with electronic music equipment in a fun and non-judgmental space

  • participate in a discussion about systems of power in the music industry

  • hang out with other cool women/non-binary folx from Oxy and the surrounding community!

No prior experience necessary!

Event is open to women/non-binary folx.

The event will be held on Friday, April 6 from 7-9pm in Lower Herrick.

About the visiting artists:

MARAL:

"Exploring and transforming the sounds of traditional Iranian music, Los Angeles-based artist Maral has formed a unique vision of club music, one that embraces her heritage and recontextualizes it for a new audience. Featuring rich vocals drenched in bass and distortion, Maral’s sound manages to feel at once soothing and intense. " -Taylor Trostle, Truants Blog

KORA:

kora colasuonno finds great joy in playing with sound. They co-facilitate fem synth lab, and are on women's center for creative work's programming board.

WHITE BOY SCREAM:

Soprano, sound artist, and teacher Micaela Tobin specializes in contemporary voice and experimental sound practice, performing her own hybrid of noise music and opera under the moniker, “White Boy Scream.” Currently, she is interested in dissecting the construct of her classical training through the genres of noise and drone. The recent premiere of her feminist, electroacoustic noise-opera, Unseal Unseam, in October of 2017 was described as “paralyzingly beautiful (New Classic LA).” An active collaborator, Micaela has premiered new work at the 2016 NOW Fest at REDCAT, OutSider Fest in Austin, and internationally at the XIII Festival Internacional Musica Nueva in Monterrey, Mexico, the New Music Encounters Plus International Music Festival in Brno, Czech Republic, the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and the 2016 Vancouver New Music Festival. She is currently on faculty in the VoiceArts department at the California Institute for the Arts.

Sponsored by the Oxy Arts Initiate! Program.
