El Duo Torres-Salducci perform the musical genre of canto nuevo ("new song"), which first emerged in the 1970's when socially engaged artists transformed popular Latin American musical traditions into expressions of creative resistance and progressive advocacy. Maestro Torres was a key figure in the genesis of canto nuevo in Chile. In 1971, he co-founded Grupo Illapo, which actively supported the progressive government of Salvador Allende, then resisted the dictorial regime of Augusto Pinochet.
