This spring, Occidental College offers an amazing lineup of arts events across campus, bringing together theater, music, poetry, film, and visual art.

From outdoor performances and major musical productions to exhibitions and student showcases, the season highlights the work of faculty, students, visiting artists, and alumni. Whether you’re drawn to live performance, experimental sound, or literary conversation, these events invite the Oxy community and the public to engage with art in many forms.

OXY ARTS

OXY ARTS and campus partners present a series of conversations, exhibitions, screenings, and workshops that explore poetry, sound, materiality, and creative exchange across disciplines.

Opening Reception:Roksana Pirouzmand: everything was once something else

Celebrate the opening of a solo exhibition by Wanlass Artist in Residence Roksana Pirouzmand, featuring new sculptural works that explore transformation, sound, and interconnectedness.

Film Screening & Conversation:The Tuba Thieves

A screening of Alison O’Daniel’s experimental documentary on sound, loss, and Deaf gain in Los Angeles, followed by a moderated conversation with the director and ASL interpretation.

Artist Talk: Roksana Pirouzmand & Candice Lin in Conversation

An in-gallery dialogue between artists Roksana Pirouzmand and Candice Lin reflecting on shared material practices, mentorship, and pedagogy.

An Evening of Poetry with Sholeh Wolpé

Iranian-American poet, writer, and translator Sholeh Wolpé presents a reading of work that is political, lyrical, and unflinching.

Fruiting Bodies: A Speculative Sound and Story Workshop with Umi Hsu

Sound artist Umi Hsu leads a performance lecture and participatory workshop using a living fungi synthesizer to explore storytelling, oral history, and speculative futures.

Theater at Oxy

The Department of Theater & Performance Studies presents two exciting productions this semester, showcasing both experimental, site-specific work and large-scale musical theater.

Calf Scramble
April 2–4 at 7:30 pm | Grassy area between Herrick Chapel and the Library
Directed by Alana Dietze, this outdoor studio production is a darkly funny and fiercely original coming-of-age story set in an East Texas barn, where five teenage girls raise calves while grappling with faith, competition, and girlhood. Free and open to the public—no reservations required.

Head Over Heels
April 17–19 & 24–26 at 7:30 pm; May 16 at 8:30 pm | Keck Theater
Directed by Laural Meade with music direction by Desiree Lavertu, this exuberant spring musical brings the music of The Go-Go’s to the stage in a joyful love story about a royal family racing to save their kingdom, and discovering themselves along the way.
