We, the faculty of the Asian Studies Program, are deeply saddened and distressed by the violence, harassment, and hateful rhetoric that have been directed against Asians and Asian Americans, particularly following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of disinformation.

We empathize with those of you who have experienced or witnessed such abuse or who have been living in fear and frustration in these troubled times. We share your fears and frustrations.

The AS faculty unequivocally condemns violence against Asians and Asian Americans. In our teaching and learning at Oxy, we strive to uplift the voices and experiences of people of Asian descent and to deepen our understanding of Asian and Asian-American cultures, histories, languages, and religions. We stand in solidarity with our students, colleagues, and members of the broader community who have been affected by this violence, and we pledge to continue working to support these communities through education and social justice.

Oxy economics major Eva Ma has prepared this important list of resources to educate ourselves in how to support Asian and Asian-American communities.

To report an act of violence against members of Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities, go to https://stopaapihate.org/. For more information on anti-Asian violence and ways to actively confront it, we encourage you to visit the website of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-LA.

Please take good care of yourselves and each other.
