The John Parke Young Initiative on the Global Political Economy welcomes Phillip Ayoub, Professor of Political Science at University College London, as part of its Fall 2026 Speaker Series.
Ayoub is the author of When States Come Out (Cambridge University Press) and, with Kristina Stoeckl, of The Global Fight Against LGBTI Rights: How Transnational Conservative Networks Target Sexual and Gender Minorities (NYU Press). His talk draws on "The Global Resistance to LGBTIQ Rights" (Journal of Democracy, January 2024), co-authored with Stoeckl, which shows how autocrats have found a new way to turn citizens against liberal democracy: by casting LGBTIQ rights, protected across much of the West, as a threat to national values.
