Scents ranging from "candy" and "musty" to "plastic" and "woody" tested among six different cultural groups to determine whether color-scent associations hold true across six different cultures. The study was led by Carmel Levitan, assistant professor of cognitive science, who shared the group's conclusions in the journal Plos One. And while the results confirmed that color-odor connections are fairly stable within a culture, Levitan's study showed quite a difference across cultures. For example: The soapy scent smelled like pastel hues to most—except for Germans and Netherlands-residing Chinese, who thought soap smelled dark gray.
