4 p.m. While the California brushfires currently in the news pose no threat to the Occidental College campus and surrounding neighborhoods, smoke from a local fire has affected campus air quality.

Smoke from the Bobcat fire in the San Gabriel Mountains, more than 15 miles to the northeast of Occidental, has prompted the South Coast Air Quality Management District to issue a smoke advisory through Friday, Sept. 11. The AQMD rates air quality in our part of the city as unhealthy. If you smell smoke or see ash due to a wildfire, the AQMD advises that you limit your exposure by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed and avoiding vigorous physical activity. You can find the AQMD’s Wildfire Smoke & Ash Health & Safety Tips page here.

We continue to monitor the situation closely.
