2:40 p.m. An update on the California fires and their minimal impact on the Occidental campus and Eagle Rock neighborhood.

Despite the media full of dramatic images of California wildfires, the Occidental College campus and the neighborhoods around it are under no threat. Even though we are remote, we know we have many students in the surrounding area, and we want to keep you informed.

The largest of the fires, the Creek fire, is more than 200 miles north of campus. The only impact here in Eagle Rock has been some smoke from the Bobcat fire, in the San Gabriel Mountains more than 15 miles to the northeast. Today’s South Coast Air Quality Management District forecast for air quality in our part of the city is unhealthy for sensitive groups.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will let you know of any significant developments.
