An update on the use of academic facilities by students who live locally or who were granted permission to remain on campus, including a reminder about the importance of social distancing.
Dear All:
We have received several inquiries from members of the Oxy community related to use of academic facilities by students who live locally, or who were granted permission to remain on campus. We want to clarify a few matters related to these requests, as we try to practice social distancing and maintain the health and safety of the members of our community whose jobs require them to be on campus regularly.
All academic work by students must be completed remotely, even those who are on or near campus. Facilities such as the Academic Commons, art studios, practice rooms, science labs, and computer labs are closed to student users. This is both an equity issue (these facilities are not available to students who are unable to be on campus), and a matter of safety for our employees that work in these spaces.
As a general rule, local students who have paid campus jobs who can work remotely are welcome (and recommended) to do so, like all employees. If the work cannot be done remotely, local students may report to their campus jobs, under the following conditions:

Students must observe social distancing

Students may not work unsupervised (the supervisor must be on campus and available to the student, in case they need assistance)

Students may not do volunteer work--these rules apply to paid work only
As we have previously indicated, work-study students who cannot come to work and who cannot work remotely will be paid.
