Andrew Zimbalist - Circus Maximus

Andrew Zimbalist has been in the economics department at Smith College since 1974 and has been a visiting professor at Doshisha University, the University of Geneva and Hamburg University. Zimbalist has consulted in Latin America for the United Nations Development Program, the U.S. Agency for International Development and numerous companies. He has consulted in the sports industry for players' associations, cities, companies, teams, and leagues.

Robert Edelman: Sports & the Cold War

Robert Edelman is an expert in Soviet and Cold War-era sports history. This talk will consider sport as a vital sphere for understanding the complex geopolitics and cultural politics of the time, not just in terms of commerce and celebrity, but also with respect to shifting notions of race, class, and gender. Edelman has written books on spectator sports in the USSR, the history of the popular soccer club Spartak Moscow, the Oxford Handbook of Sports History, and on sport in the cold war. Since 1972, Edelman has been a professor of history at UC San Diego.

Rick Cole, Oxy ‘78, has served as Santa Monica’s City Manager since 2015, overseeing an annual budget of over $700 million.  He has spearheaded work on converting the Santa Monica Airport to parkland, improving public transportation,  taking regional leadership on homelessness, and fostering an inclusive and diverse community.  He has been recognized as one of “America's Public Officials of the Year” by Governing Magazine. Prior to coming to Santa Monica, Cole served as Deputy Mayor for Budget and Innovation for the City of Los Angeles where he oversaw five city departments.

Pardis Mahdavi serves as the Dean of the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies. Mahdavi's research interests include gendered labor, human trafficking, migration, sexuality, human rights, youth culture, transnational feminism and public health in the context of changing global and political structures. Mahdavi received her PhD in Sociomedical Sciences and Anthropology, MPhil in Anthropology and Master's in International Affairs from Columbia University. She also studied Diplomacy and World Affairs as an undergraduate at Occidental College.
