What happens when we attempt to construct the Fibonacci spiral with triangles instead of squares? We get a new sequence, the Padovan sequence, which answers its own collection of unique and beautiful counting problems. In this talk we will show how this construction defines this sequence and then rediscover the same sequence hiding again in other surprising places. We then prove several identities without using either words or numbers, by considering triangles composed of colored dots.
Occidental College is offering a virtual workshop and info session for prospective Theater majors and minors.
We are looking for students with an interest in all areas of theater: acting, directing, writing, designing, stage managing, dramaturgy and research, dance, and technicians. Students spend the afternoon in a Q & A session, virtual theater tour, online master class, and breakout sessions with professors who specialize in various areas of theater.
Join the Oxy community in a hands-on bookmaking workshop led by faculty members James Ford (English, Black Studies) and Jocelyn Pedersen (Art/Art History, Library) on Thursday, October 22, from 9:30 - 11 a.m. Using this year’s Community Book selection Red at the Bone: A Novel as a guide, participants will work during the virtual workshop to create a handcrafted book.
A core element of our partnership with the In Plain Sight coalition is to consider how artists and art spaces can be advocates for social change, on a local and global level. As part of our fall programming, we are offering a series of workshops led by community organizers on topics related to our exhibition and critical to supporting the well-being of our communities—abolishing prisons, ICE and police, and creating community care through mutual aid networks.
All workshops meet on Tuesdays, at 5pm PST.
