Behind-the-Scenes Tour of Moore Lab

Tucked within a liberal arts college in Northeast Los Angeles is a hidden research gem for bird scientists. Moore Laboratory of Zoology of Occidental College houses over 65,000 museum specimens, with majority of those being bird study skins from Mexico.

Take a tour and discover native bird species, a painstakingly-collected hummingbird collection that represents 88% of all hummingbird species of the Americas, rare extinct birds, and see specimens up-close that represent Mexico's bird diversity prior to major habitat change.

Parrot Roost Watch with the Moore Lab

When you hear or see the wild parrots of Los Angeles do you ever wonder where they're headed? Roosting sites are a wonderful way to observe hundreds of parrots and parakeets gather during winter evenings. Moore Lab launched the Free-flying Los Angeles Parrot Project (FLAPP), where we're looking closely at the DNA of both the Red-crowned and Lilac-crowned Parrots and analyzing community science observations along the way. These Amazona parrots are native to opposite coasts of Mexico and never meet, but in L.A.

Sound Bath in the Olive Grove

Our Olive Grove is one of the most resilient places on campus, as these trees use little water, withstand heat, and store CO2.

Due to lower than usual yield, we will not have our Annual Olive Harvest this fall. Yet to continue the tradition, we invite you to celebrate our olive trees. Co-sponsors include Office of Sustainability, Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, Emmons Health and FEAST.
