Thank you for choosing Occidental College.
After over a year spent remotely, welcoming students back to campus this year has reconfirmed for all of us the specialness of, and need for, community at Occidental College. We are grateful to you for being a vital part of our community, one that extends across the United States and around the world.
We are always very mindful of the sacrifices our families make to send their children to Occidental, and we take great efforts to keep costs down. This year is no exception. Every dollar we spend has a direct impact on the quality of education your student receives. Still, in planning for the next academic year, we must consider the costs of pandemic-related health and safety measures and recent inflationary trends as well as the rising costs of the labor-intensive, intimate education we provide. It is in this context that I am writing to let you know that the Board of Trustees has set next year’s increase in tuition and room and board rates at 3.7%.
Tuition functions as the largest source of support for ongoing operations and important programs at the College, and it also contributes to financial aid. Occidental’s policy of meeting the demonstrated financial need of every student remains unchanged. We spent $48.7 million on financial aid last year with 76% of our students receiving some form of aid. And we are deeply gratified by the response to The Oxy Campaign For Good—the most ambitious comprehensive campaign in the College’s history. To date, we have raised almost 90 percent of our goal of $100 million for student scholarships.
Through the current Integrated Strategic Planning effort that is well underway, we will continue to build upon our distinctive brand of liberal arts education. We seek to prepare Oxy students for lives of meaning and impact regardless of what fields they decide to pursue. Thank you for your belief in and commitment to an Oxy education.
