Senior Director of Student Wellness Sara Semal notifies students of the August 17 deadline to waive student health insurance—a necessary step even if they will be studying remotely this fall.

With the fall plan to be remote, we are still requiring students to waive the student health insurance, but are changing our waiver exceptions and allowing students not living on campus to waive with any active health plan. Please read the information below carefully.

ALL STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT A WAIVER OR OPT-IN, as past waivers cannot be used for the current year. If you do not want the student health insurance and do not waive by the deadline of AUGUST 17, your student account will be charged for the student health insurance through United Healthcare.

ALL DOMESTIC STUDENTS MUST submit health insurance information OR opt-in to the student health insurance through the JCB Insurance website, regardless of where they are living. *Note: Insurance information that you have provided in the past does not roll over into the current year - you must fill out this information annually.

FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE INVITED TO LIVE ON CAMPUS, you may only waive with insurance that provides access to primary care in Los Angeles County (most PPO, Kaiser, and local HMO plans). The waiver system will allow you to complete the waiver, but insurance information will be reviewed for waiver eligibility by Emmons staff after submission. Those eligible to waive will be contacted by Emmons staff to confirm the desire to waive.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT LIVING ON CAMPUS, we will utilize your insurance information for telemedical care charges and for local referrals to providers and specialists, if warranted. Also, we will use the information submitted for spring 2021 waiver eligibility so that you do not have to re-submit this information if we return in the spring.

ALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS are not able to waive and will be automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan. If you are an international student who is enrolled at Oxy but living in your home country, exceptions may be made. Please contact me if you fall within this category of special circumstance.

ALL STUDENTS will be able to utilize Emmons medical services regardless of health insurance. Emmons will offer telemedical care primarily, in person care for those who are local and the provider deems they require an in-person visit, and referrals to in person care for those who are not local and the provider deems they require an in-person visit.

ALL STUDENTS may utilize the student health insurance and enroll via the website. You do not need to live on or near the Oxy campus to purchase the Oxy student health insurance. Oxy's plan is contracted with United Healthcare and is a full-scale PPO that can be utilized by in-network providers throughout the United States and for reimbursement for care abroad. Details of the plan are as follows:

Cost: $2,594/year; $1,297/semester
Coverage Dates: Annual: August 1, 2020 - July 31, 2021
Fall semester: August 1, 2020 - December 31, 2020
Spring semester : January 1, 2021 - July 31, 2021
Plan Details: PPO plan covers primary, preventive, pharmacy, mental health, inpatient, urgent and emergency care
Student Wellness Center: May utilize Emmons Wellness Center on campus for a $10 copay, $0 deductible and 100% coverage
National Coverage: May utilize outside providers for a $30 copay, $150 deductible and 80% coverage

Please note that the cost of the student health insurance plan fluctuates annually based on market conditions; we work hard to negotiate the best possible rates for our students without any markup or hidden fees.

Please feel free to email me at any time if you have any questions or concerns.
