An Oxy student and a young child

Occidental College's Community Literacy Center: Where Oxy students and kids connect.

In the true spirit of community engagement, each participant grows from the other. Here both Oxy students and local children enrich each other's lives in a warm and welcoming environment.

What's the focus?  Creative exploration in language arts.  Enrichment at all levels, whether the child is gifted, an English-language learner, or perhaps faces a temporary roadblock in finding a love of reading, writing and creative expression, or all of the above. We integrate arts, technology and critical thinking and critical literacy in an engaging and meaningful way.

Who are the kids? From the community local charter, public and private schools including children of staff and faculty. We get kindergarteners through fifth graders, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m.  We welcome sixth through eighth graders on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

How do Oxy students get involved?  Enroll in EDUC 140 or EDUC 141 for 2 units, CR/NC.
