You are cordially invited to a celebration of objects, performance, and prose featuring William Leon Dawson’s The Birds of California volumes, first published one-hundred years ago in 1923. In his writings, Dawson captured a comprehensive scope of complete, scientific, and popular accounts of the “vividly contrasting and kaleidoscopic” bird life found here in the Golden State.
On January 28, Talking Books will present its inaugural Greg Critser ’80 Memorial Series event with a celebration of the author’s work. Greg Critser, Occidental College '80, was an American writer on medicine, science, food and health. His work has appeared in periodicals ranging from the New York Times to the Times of London, and from Harper's to the New Yorker and is the author of the award-winning Generation Rx: How Prescription Drugs are Altering American Minds, Lives and Bodies.
Building on a long and storied tradition of fine-printing at Occidental, this beautiful book came about as a result of collaboration with LA poet Suzanne Lummis, who taught a 6 week creative writing course in Spring 2017 with the NELA community, Oxy students, and local poets. We very much hope you will join us in this celebration of their accomplishment and of the holiday season!
