The Cost of Borders

Professor Gowayed's research centers the lives of cross-border migrants, and the unequal and often violent institutions they face. She is the author of Refuge, which explores how states shape the potential of people pursuing refuge within their borders. Gowayed's talk will focus on her forthcoming second book, The Cost of Borders, which theorizes borders as a series of costly, and often deadly, transactions. Gowayed's global, comparative research, includes a focus on how to conceptualize and potentially re-conceptualize borders within Israel/Palestine.

Human Rights Abuses & Political Persecution in El Salvador

Ovidio Mauricio is the director of Tutela Legal Dra. Maria Julia Hernandez, a leading human rights organization currently defending many of the tens of thousands of innocent people who have been detained under the State of Exception, a suspension of various constitutional rights that was imposed in March 2022 that has led to mass arrests and widespread human rights abuses, including the deaths of over 150 people while in custody.
