MAC Department Information Session

This session is designed for discerning MAC Majors or Minors, particularly first-year students. We'll discuss requirements for the MAC Major and Minor, look specifically at SP 20 registration and course offerings, and answer any questions you may have.

Don't wait until Advising or Registration Week! Come meet and talk with us ahead of time on the 23rd.

Politics 101 Monday Night Film "Hot Coffee"

Hot Coffee (89 min) exposes how corporations spent millions on a propaganda campaign to distort Americans' view of lawsuits, forever changing the civil justice system. From the infamous case of the woman who sued McDonald's over spilled coffee to the saga of the Mississippi Supreme Court Justice deemed 'not corporate enough' by business interests, this program tears apart the conventional wisdom about 'frivolous lawsuits.'

Carly Phillips '12: Climate change science in a rapidly warming Alaska

The response of arctic and boreal ecosystems to global change will be critical for future climate, due to their vast stores of carbon. Impacts from accelerated climate warming can already be seen across the landscape from the expansion of woody vegetation in arctic tundra to increased frequency and intensity of wildfires in boreal forests. Both of these climate impacts threaten to release vast stores of carbon to the atmosphere and exacerbate climate warming.

Melissa DeBiasse: Boring sponges and glowing ctenophores

I use genome sequence data as a tool to understand how marine invertebrates respond to their environments. I measure changes in gene expression to understand how individuals cope with day-to-day environmental stress and compare patterns of gene gain and loss to understand how species evolve over generations. In my seminar I will present my research testing how ocean acidification affects corals and sponges in the Caribbean and how bioluminescence has evolved across ctenophores.

This seminar is sponsored by the Remsen Bird Fund and the Biology department.
