Sama: The Divine Listening Room - Performance by Arshia Fatima Haq + Maral

Artists Arshia Fatima Haq and Maral will perform Sama: The Divine Listening Room, an experimental pre-recorded sound and visual piece in the form of a call and response, with collaborative video work by Anum Awan and Amy Alexander.

Imbued with fragrance and flowers, the immersive experience invites the listener to join in sama, the act of hearing the divine through deep listening and meditation common in Sufi dargahs or shrines.

Déjenme Gritar (Let Me Scream) by Dorian Wood + La Victoria

Join vocalist Dorian Wood and mariachi ensemble La Victoria for an evening of love letters and laments dedicated to community members who are unjustly detained. In this expression of collective grief and community, they will offer songs and words that ring true in our hearts and unify us in these darkest of times.

This event will be live-streamed from the Occidental College campus.

Film Screening: Narcissister Organ Player (Dir. Narcissister)

Join us for a virtual screening of the award-winning Narcissister Organ Player, a hybrid performance/documentary film that explores how ancestral data is stored in our bodies, impacting the lives we lead. On the personal level, the film investigates how the artist's complex family history compelled her to create the masked, erotic performance character Narcissister.

Oxy Arts and the Arts in Los Angeles Immersive Semester

Oxy Arts opened in 2019 on York Boulevard and is the community-based arts hub of Occidental College. The Arts in Los Angeles Immersive Semester is an interdisciplinary approach for first-year students, even while remote, to become actively involved in research on and the work of the arts in Los Angeles. At this special event, Oxy Arts Director Meldia Yesayan and Professor Amy Lyford will discuss their work with Oxy students and the Eagle Rock community, and how these new programs are enriching the Oxy experience.
