Learn about waiving Oxy’s Student Health Insurance Plan.
Oxy Student Health Insurance Plan (OSHIP)
Emmons Medical Services is contracted only with the Oxy Student Health Insurance Plan (OSHIP). Students with OSHIP have an Office Visit Copay of $10, which includes the fees for the visit, in-house testing, medications, immunizations, and supplies. More information
Private Insurance
Many students have other forms of private insurance rather than OSHIP. If you waived OSHIP and have another form of private insurance, your coverage for services at Emmons—from the initial visit to lab tests to medications—will differ depending on your plan's coverage for out-of-network care.
Certain health insurance plans will not cover any out-of-network care. If you have such a plan, with no out-of-network coverage, and come to Emmons for care, you will be paying out-of-pocket for services.
If you do not have OSHIP and your private insurance does not cover your visit, you will receive a 50% discount on medical services from Emmons. We strive to make our medical care low-cost for all students. The cost per visit will vary depending on the diagnosis and what our medical providers deem medically necessary during your visit. Most office visits cost between $50 and $120. Follow-up appointments are free of charge. To give you an idea of what services might cost, here are some ranges of what we bill for:

Referrals to Off-Campus Care
Sometimes Emmons Wellness Center will refer students to care off-campus when it falls outside of our scope of practice: imaging, specialty care, physical therapy, etc. We maintain a list of local providers who are in-network with Aetna Student Health/OSHIP.
Students without OSHIP who have private health insurance that covers primary and specialty care in the Los Angeles area should identify provider/s that are in-network with their insurance if they need to be referred off-campus for care.
Students without OSHIP who have private health insurance plans with just emergency coverage (no coverage of primary or specialty care in Los Angeles) will need to pay out-of-pocket for care they receive off-campus, and/or seek care at a hospital Emergency Department. Out-of-pocket costs will depend on the students' particular health insurance plan as well as the fees determined by off-campus providers.
Waiving the Oxy Health Insurance Plan
All enrolled students must have health insurance through an ACA accredited/approved health insurance plan while at Oxy. Students may opt to enroll in the Oxy Student Health Insurance Plan (OSHIP), or to waive OSHIP and maintain their own health insurance, as long as the coverage meets minimum essential coverage (MEC) requirements. While not required, it is strongly recommended that for on-campus study, students have health insurance that covers primary and specialty care services in Los Angeles County. Many MEC plans only provide emergency coverage, meaning that routine services a student might need—such as annual wellness visits, non-emergency office or specialist visits, non-acute mental health care, lab work/diagnostic testing, physical therapy, and other benefits—are not covered. Before waiving OSHIP, please confirm that your student will be within your plan’s service area.
A student may opt out of the Oxy Student Health Insurance Plan (OSHIP) by filling out an online waiver and providing proof of active health insurance at www.jcbins.com.
The deadline for applying for a health insurance waiver for the Fall 2026 Semester is Thursday, August 20, 2026 at 5:00pm. Applications will not be reviewed after this date and time. The health insurance waiver is only accessible electronically, and can be found at www.jcbins.com.

The student health insurance plan through Aetna Student Health covers primary, urgent, emergent, pharmaceutical and behavioral health care locally, nationally and internationally. There are no breaks in coverage, so students will be covered while on winter and summer breaks.
Aetna Student Health Insurance is a full service PPO plan that works at all Aetna Healthcare providers throughout the United States, and covers primary, urgent, emergent, pharmaceutical and behavioral health care. Providers who do not accept Aetna will accept Aetna Student Health insurance at out-of-network rates. Student health insurance can be utilized anywhere in the US. Internationally, insurance can be used via reimbursement for services. Patients must call the insurance company before they go to the doctor to authorize the visit (if possible), or soon after to make them aware of the visit and the upcoming reimbursement request. Patients must retain all medical documents and receipts for services.
