What do chaplains do?
Chaplains offer spiritual and moral support to the students, faculty, and staff of Occidental College. Chaplains act as interfaith ministers providing a confidential, non-judgmental, compassionate "ministry of presence” and listening ear to people of all faiths, philosophies, or no faith at all without proselytizing or imposing personal beliefs.
Chaplains:
- Provide a safe, non-judgmental space for individuals navigating grief, anxiety, moral dilemmas, or life transitions.
- Assist individuals with existential, ethical, or spiritual questions, supply religious resources, and facilitate interfaith dialogue.
- Foster community, ethics discussions, and listening sessions to address the unique joys and challenges of higher education
- Offer spiritual and religious practices that support meaning making and connection to others, our environment, and our understanding of our humanity and purpose.
- Chaplains can refer to mental health professionals and supportive services
