Detecting Musical Influence
Speaker:
 Professor Amanda Beecher

Music is a powerful force that can influence how we feel and create strong ties between people. Musicians themselves are influenced by the music they hear, and those musical influences have the potential to manifest in the music they create. Are we able to detect the influence of another artist in their music? The data of music may be one strategy to detect this musical influence between musicians. In this talk, we use self-reported data by musicians on their musical influencers along with data of the elements of the music to explore the relationships between musicians and songs.

Amanda Beecher is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Ramapo College of New Jersey.  She serves as the founding department head of the Data Science undergraduate program and Program Director of the Master’s in Applied Mathematics program at Ramapo College.  She earned her Ph.D. from the University at Albany, SUNY. Before arriving at Ramapo, she had a three-year post-doc at the US Military Academy, where her interests in applied mathematics were fostered.  Her research interests include combinatorics, graph theory, commutative algebra, modern applied mathematics including data analysis, and mathematical modeling. Her educational endeavors include bringing interdisciplinary modeling opportunities to colleagues and students, particularly through her role as the Director of the Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling.
