Mark Allen is an artist and curator based in Los Angeles. Between 2003 and 2018 he was the executive director of Machine Project, a nonprofit art space that produced more than 2,000 events in 15 years, including operas for dogs, vacations for plants, and concerts for dentists, as well as shows with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum at UCLA, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Dever, the Walker Museum in Minneapolis and the Tang Teaching Museum in Satatoga Springs, New York. In this talk, Allen will present Machine's most facinating successes, mysterious failures and what it takes to start, run (and close) an experimental art space in Los Angeles.
