Rustle and Cry, by Hana S. Kim, is a site-specific video art installation that will be projected onto the facades of the Fowler-Johnson buildings and can be viewed nightly from the courtyard. The installation is conceived in collaboration with Visiting Professor Camilla Taylor's ARTS228 | Book Arts: The Hand Printed Book class and presented in conjunction with a limited edition collaborative art book.
It is a playful exploration of the poetry and imagery from the book, which in turn is a response to observations of the dynamic between human and urban wildlife on campus. The poem consolidates the collective experience and observation from the class, and the installation finds forms where each collaborating artists’ contemplations weave in and out, morphing from one form to another.
The Ettinger Projected Poetry and Art Project is a public art project that infuses the written word and images into everyday moments around campus. Presented nightly for several hours each semester through spring 2020, the rotating exhibitions will project provocative and intellectual work on frequently viewed spaces on campus, inspiring deep collaborations between the arts and digital sciences and building pathways and partnerships that mirror our increasingly pluralistic world.
Visiting Artists:
Camilla Taylor grew up in Provo, Utah, later attending the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, pursuing a BFA in Fine Arts with an emphasis in printmaking. She moved to the LA area to attend California State University, Long Beach, to receive a Master of Fine Arts with an emphasis in printmaking. She has a sculptural contemporary approach to printmaking and book arts, emphasizing a strong basis in skill and craft in order to experiment in a knowledgeable and meaningful way with the forms. She now lives in Los Angeles with her partner and two cats.
Hana S. Kim is an award-winning theater designer and visual artist based in Los Angeles. Her design works have been seen across the country including Public Theater in NY, A.C.T in SF, LA Opera, Geffen Playhouse, Baltimore Center Stage, Opera Colorado and South Coast Rep. Hana Kim also worked on video art installation at the Annenberg Space of Photography in LA and Baryshnikov Arts Center in NY. She is a 2018 Richard E.Sherwood Awardee from CTG, recipient of Princess Grace Award in Theater Design. Her designs have won Helen Hayes Award, Stage Raw Awards, StageSceneLA Awards and Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Awards. Recent projects include The Great Leap (American Conservatory Theater), Ragtime (Pasadena Playhouse), Fun Home (Baltimore Center Stage), and Mahabharata, working title (Workshop with Shaw Festival Theatre).
