MAC Cinematheque: The Climb Screening + Q&A

This screening is part of the Media Arts & Culture Department's Fall 2022 MAC Cinematheque series, which brings together the Occidental and Los Angeles communities to explore representational questions tied to a chosen theme. This fall's series, titled "Oxy Creates: Films by Occidental Alumni" includes two additional alumni events: God's Country (2022) with executive producer Anthony Ciardelli '10 in attendance at 7 PM on September 14 (pre-reception at 6PM), and Cherry 2000 (1987) with director Steve De Jarnatt '74 in attendance at 7 PM on November 10.

Prof. Hasia Diner (NYU): "How to Understand Anti-Semitism in America: A View from History"

The history of the United States cannot be disconnected from the history of words, images, and social practices which defined Jews as different than other Americans. Since the seventeenth century, before national independence and into the present day, the presence of Jews has challenged Americans' ideas about race, religion, and the fundamental matter of who counted as an American. Did this constitute anti-Semitism? What factors in American life impacted upon this powerful social force imported from Europe?
