Volunteer Opportunities in Health Care

Glendale/Pasadena Area

Community Health Alliance of Pasadena

Multiple locations for medical, dental, behavioral health, outreach/health education services

ChapCare provides a broad range of health services to meet the needs of individuals and families in our community. Patients are assigned to a physician in ChapCare’s network and work closely with a team to ensure comprehensive care, regardless of ability to pay. Their fully integrated system of care improves health outcomes, reduces health care disparities, and encourages prevention and healthy living.

Opportunities are available for volunteer support during the hours of 8:00 am to 8:00 pm throughout the hospital. Required minimum commitment of one 4-hour day per week for 6 months. The volunteer program offers opportunities in many departments including patient care units, cancer center, patient escort, skilled nursing facility, short stay surgery and emergency room. Assignments are made according to interests, qualifications, availability and need for a service. Time commitment requirements: Students commit to a six-month (40-hour for high school, 50-hour for college) involvement.

Volunteers must be at least 17 years old, must commit to a minimum of three to five hours per week, until the minimum commitment of 60 hours is met,and must attend a comprehensive orientation prior to beginning the volunteer position.Other requirements include: a complete background check (including references, criminal records and child abuse history); up-to-date vaccinations, including tuberculosis and other infectious diseases; and a drug test.

Their services are designed for all ages, from infants and children, to teens, adults, and the elderly. 

California Hospital Medical Center

The volunteer program offers opportunities in many departments including patient care units, cancer center, patient escort, skilled nursing facility, short stay surgery and emergency room. Assignments are made according to interests, qualifications, availability and need for a service. Time commitment requirements: Must serve a four-hour minimum shift per week. Students must volunteer fifty (50) hours of service per semester.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles

CHLA offers volunteer opportunities in two categories: direct patient care and little or no patient care. A few number of volunteers work at the Guest Services desk and in various clinics and offices within the hospital. Some volunteers also read aloud to patients and families in the waiting room of the General Pediatrics Clinic. Time commitment requirements: Complete 100 hours of service in no less than six months of consecutive service.

Volunteers answer telephones and file, greet patients and visitors, make photocopies, run errands, offer books and magazines to patients from a library cart, prepare literature for mailing, and many other duties. The requirements for being a volunteer at CHMC include a brief interview, passing a physical, background check, and being committed to work a total of 40 hours. Volunteers are encouraged to work a minimum of 4 hours on any day they are available to work. The volunteer is required to purchase a jacket or smock to wear while on duty.

City of Hope

The volunteer service program at the City of Hope offers a variety of experience including working along-side physicians, nurses and researchers. When your application is received, information about available volunteer opportunities, as well as an invitation to attend a required three-hour orientation will be sent to you. Afterwards, a few standard safety and security procedures will follow. New volunteers must undergo a background check, supply medical records confirming that they have a current measles, mumps, Rubella immunization, and take a tuberculosis test. This 2-step skin test is required by regulatory agencies and is given free of charge to volunteer applicants.

Each volunteer is enrolled in a volunteer category: Community Volunteer, Guild Member, Junior Volunteer, Pastoral Services Volunteer, Student Volunteer (Radiology/Nuclear Medicine/Social Services and Nutritional Services), Professional Volunteer, High School Partners Volunteer (King/Drew School of Science, Carson High, Gene Black and Chadwick High) or Special Project Volunteer, that defines his/her level of commitment and the extent and scope of services in his/her assignment. Volunteers are an integral part of the Hospice Team, providing emotional, spiritual and physical support to terminally ill patients, while giving a much-needed break to caregivers. Volunteer opportunities also include making special gifts for patients and providing clerical help in the office. Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age. Volunteers are needed in the communities of; Artesia, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Cerritos, Commerce, Compton, Downey, Huntington Park, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Lynwood, Maywood, Norwalk, Paramount, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, South Gate, Vernon and Whittier.
