Michael John (UCSC): Game Design as a Liberal Art - Sponsored by the Remsem Bird Fund and the Computer Science Department

October 30th - 5-6 PM
Johnson 203Invention is novelty stacked on history, or as Newton said, "standing on the shoulders of giants." This concept was at the core of the liberal arts education I received at OXY in the late 80's, and though "Game Design" was nowhere to be found in the curriculum, I will argue that a liberal arts education gave me the best preparation I could have had for a successful 20+year career in the field. The talk will describe game design in terms of intellectual underpinnings and its modern practice, and how liberal arts approach is a key advantage in making new, exciting video games.
