A Detroit native, visionary storyteller and multiple award-winning filmmaker, Christine Swanson earned her MFA in Film from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, one of the nation’s top-ranked graduate film programs. CNN identified Christine as one of the most promising filmmakers to emerge from NYU’s graduate film program since Martin Scorsese, Ang Lee, Oliver Stone, and Spike Lee (Christine’s NYU directing teacher). Christine also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame, double majoring in Communications and Japanese.

Padovan, Pascal and Proofs Without Words

What happens when we attempt to construct the Fibonacci spiral with triangles instead of squares? We get a new sequence, the Padovan sequence, which answers its own collection of unique and beautiful counting problems. In this talk we will show how this construction defines this sequence and then rediscover the same sequence hiding again in other surprising places. We then prove several identities without using either words or numbers, by considering triangles composed of colored dots.

Prospective Theater Student Day

Occidental College is offering a virtual workshop and info session for prospective Theater majors and minors.

We are looking for students with an interest in all areas of theater: acting, directing, writing, designing, stage managing, dramaturgy and research, dance, and technicians. Students spend the afternoon in a Q & A session, virtual theater tour, online master class, and breakout sessions with professors who specialize in various areas of theater.

Join the Oxy community in a hands-on bookmaking workshop led by faculty members James Ford (English, Black Studies) and Jocelyn Pedersen (Art/Art History, Library) on Thursday, October 22, from 9:30 - 11 a.m. Using this year’s Community Book selection Red at the Bone: A Novel as a guide, participants will work during the virtual workshop to create a handcrafted book.
