Know Your Rights Under California Law

California prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, whether in schools, housing, public accommodations, employment, or other settings.

Under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) and related statutes, it is illegal for employers, housing providers, public accommodations (e.g., businesses, health care providers), or educational institutions to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Under the Support Academic Futures and Educators for Today’s Youth (SAFETY) Act (effective Jan 1, 2025), institutions may not require LGBTQIA+ students to disclose their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to parents or others

Under California law, LGBTQIA+ people have the right to access health care and other services without being discriminated against on the basis of gender identity.

Trans Defense Fund LA

Trans Defense Fund LA aims to provide trans individuals living in Los Angeles with safety kits. Through donations from individuals in our community, the Trans Defense Fund has been able to supply over 3,000 individuals with safety kits to date! Transgender Law Center is the largest national trans-led organization advocating self-determination for all people. Since 2002 the Transgender Law Center has been organizing, assisting, informing and empowering thousands of individual community members towards a long-term, national, trans-led movement for liberation.
