New Faculty Orientation

Welcome to Oxy!

The New Faculty Orientation aims to introduce new faculty to Oxy's culture and community. This year’s orientation will be held on Friday, August 17, 2018, in Salsbury-Young (a room on the north end of the Johnson Student Center, #15 on the campus map found here). You will be given a detailed, printed agenda at the meeting. The general schedule of our day will be as follows: 

8:30-8:50         Breakfast & mingling

8:50-10:00       Welcome & introductions

10:00-11:30      Student support services

- academic accommodations

- students in crisis

- Emmons Wellness Center

- Dean of Students Office

11:00-11:15     coffee break

11:15-11:55     Title IX & creating welcoming and inclusive learning environments 

11:45-12:20     Academic support services for FACULTY

- course counts, class lists, enrollment overrides, add/drop, CR/NC, incompletes, submitting grades, classroom requests

- Faculty Resource Guidebook, myOxy, Center for Teaching Excellence programs and Moodle site, funds for course enhancements (Guest Faculty, LA excursions)

- academic support offices—Community Based Learning & Research; Center for Digital Liberal Arts; Special Collections, Moodle, Media Services, ITS

12:20-1:10      lunch

1:10-2:10     Faculty panel on Oxy's mission and culture; Oxy students; and teaching techniques that work well at Occidental

2:10-2:30    Academic support services for STUDENTS

- The Writing program, Academic mastery program, and other academic support services for students

2:30-2:45         coffee break

2:45-3:45         Student panel on pedagogical approaches that facilitate student learning, on issues that come up in the classroom, and what new faculty should know about the student experience at Oxy

3:45-4:40        Syllabus workshopping (led by current Oxy faculty)

4:45-5:00         Assessment of orientation
