Right off of campus, behind the College's library, sits the Intercultural Community Center (ICC). Designed for those identifying as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, low-income and first in their family to attend college, the ICC is a home away from home for Occidental students.

Since I stepped foot on campus in 2023, the Intercultural Community Center (ICC) has always been a place I can go, whether I just need some quiet time to myself or someone to talk to. As a participant in the Multicultural Summer Institute, I got to know the ICC through the various programs and dinners they hosted. I was inspired by the work they do for the community and wanted to support their mission, prompting me to apply for a job. Now as an Equity Ambassador of the ICC, I’ve connected with numerous groups of people through my work. I plan and host events that center various communities and create safe spaces for those who may not have one on campus.

The ICC’s location is of note: located across the street from the back of the library, it feels secluded and removed from the busier life on campus. It creates a peaceful environment for those of us who frequent the space, as we can relax and talk without having to worry about who might hear. There are many drop-in spaces if we need someone to talk to, a kitchen if we want to cook, and also a nice living space where students often unwind and watch reality shows together. The ICC is a space where time slows down and where students can catch their breath. Here, we can enjoy the small moments in life.

Curating events is integral to the work that the ICC does. Getting to program through the ICC has made my experience at Oxy so much more enjoyable and purposeful. One event that stands out is the Asian Tea Party I hosted. There was a bouquet-making activity and foods from different cultures to share and try. Upon identifying holes in the community and having a hard time finding proper support, I decided to build my own through hosting Asian-centered events. Through the tea party, I met staff members who were also interested in the purpose, prompting us to work together and plan more activities together. Working at the ICC and hosting events like the tea party gave me meaning on campus, one encouraging me to help unify people.

As an Equity Ambassador, there is so much we can do for the communities we serve. We can host events, facilitate conversations, bring in speakers, and more. We are given a platform and resources to help satisfy needs and create positive change. I take a lot of pride in my work as I know that I am helping people create lasting memories, and I love seeing fellow students enjoy the work that we do, as our work is meant to serve them. We strive for the ICC to be a home away from home for many students.
