Vaccination Information

In preparation for a return to campus this fall, Occidental will require all students, staff and faculty to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, with proof of vaccination.

Last updated 9/1/21

On May 25, President Elam sent an email regarding Oxy’s new COVID-19 vaccination requirements along with information about updated protocols for vaccinated and unvaccinated community members. With the FDA approval of the Pfizer vaccine, Oxy will only allow exemptions for medical reasons and sincerely held religious beliefs. Those who previously declined for personal reasons will need to submit proof of being fully vaccinated by October 4. Unvaccinated individuals with an approved exemption will be subject to twice-weekly testing, as well as other preventative measures (including but not limited to masking, daily health checks, social distancing, etc.) to protect the health and well-being of the Oxy community.

FAQs: Vaccinations & Vaccine Policy

How many people in our community are vaccinated?

As of August 25, there is an impressive 98% vaccination rate on campus across students, staff and faculty.

Will non-exempt employees receive time off from work to become vaccinated?

Yes, non-exempt employees will be released from their regular responsibilities to obtain each dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Employees should work with their supervisors to schedule time off to obtain the vaccine.

Does Oxy permit exemptions based on medical contraindication or sincerely held religious beliefs?

Yes, please see information on Vaccine Reporting and Exemptions.

If I have a disability that I believe impacts my ability to receive the COVID-19 vaccine (other than a medical contraindication or precaution to receive the vaccine as established by the CDC or manufacturer), will Oxy permit an exemption to the vaccination requirement?

Please contact Human Resources regarding any disability-related requests for accommodations related to Oxy’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement (other than requests for exemption based on medical contraindication to receive the vaccine). Oxy will provide reasonable accommodations to individuals with qualifying disabilities.

What are the consequences for not reporting vaccination status or otherwise complying with Oxy’s vaccination policy?

We appreciate that employees understand the importance of reporting vaccination status and the significant majority have, in fact, reported their status. It should be noted, however, that failure to report will be treated in the same way as a refusal to abide by any other College policy.  We would naturally try to work with employees to resolve any inadvertent non-compliance or individual challenges in getting and/or reporting vaccination, but deliberate or repeated non-compliance could result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Students may similarly be subject to disciplinary action through the Code of Student Conduct, which may include, but not be limited to, prohibition from accessing or using campus grounds or campus facilities. Student violations of College policy will be handled by the Office of Student Conduct pursuant to the Student Code of Conduct.

Will Oxy administer booster shots this fall?

The College is aware of the CDC’s recommendation regarding “booster shots” to be administered eight months after a second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. We do not have any new information at this time regarding whether Oxy will administer booster shots. We do expect them to be widely available at local pharmacies and other locations, and will continue to keep the community updated. Please note that the eight-month timeframe means boosters are not needed until late this year for those community members who were vaccinated in the spring.

How do event planners and employees check vaccination status for non-Oxy visitors?

Find instructions for groups that are running events or have occasion to check vaccination status.
