Understanding Reporting Options and Available Resources

Occidental College is committed to ensuring that all members of our community are aware of the reporting options, supportive resources, and confidential services available to individuals experiencing sexual or interpersonal misconduct. This October 8, 2026, message from the Civil Rights & Title IX Office and Office of Student Conduct outlines available resources, how to seek support or submit a report, and an important reminder regarding Responsible Employee obligations.

Dear Oxy Community,

Recent national conversations about sexual misconduct on college and university campuses may be prompting questions or concerns for members of our community. We want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the reporting options and resources available at Occidental.

CIVIL RIGHTS & TITLE IX OFFICE

If you or someone you know has experienced sexual or interpersonal misconduct, including sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating or domestic violence, stalking, or sexual exploitation, the Civil Rights & Title IX Office is available to help.

You do not need to know how to label what happened or decide how you would like to proceed before reaching out. Contacting the Civil Rights & Title IX Office does not automatically initiate an investigation or disciplinary process. Our office can provide information about your rights and options, connect you with support and resources, and discuss the different resolution options that may be available to you.

Reports may be made through the College’s Civil Rights & Title IX online reporting form. Anonymous reports may also be submitted through the College’s anonymous reporting form.

OFFICE OF STUDENT CONDUCT

The Office of Student Conduct addresses other potential violations of the Code of Student Conduct involving individual students and student organizations. This may include concerns such as disruptive or threatening behavior, hazing, property damage, alcohol or drug-related conduct, or violations of other College rules or policies. Community members may submit these concerns through the Student Conduct Incident Report Form.

The Office of Student Conduct is also available to speak with students who have questions or concerns, want to better understand the student conduct process, or are deciding whether they would like to submit a report. To schedule a meeting, please email conduct@oxy.edu. The Office of Student Conduct also hosts weekly drop-in office hours on Thursdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. for students that have questions or would like to discuss a concern.
CONFIDENTIAL SUPPORT

We recognize that not everyone is ready or interested in making a report. Confidential resources can provide support and help individuals explore their options without sharing information with the Civil Rights & Title IX Office or initiating a College process. Students who would like confidential support may contact:

  • Project SAFE Survivor Advocates
Project SAFE Survivor Advocates provide confidential, survivor-centered support to students who have experienced sexual or interpersonal misconduct. Advocates can help students understand their options, connect with resources, navigate College or external processes, and accompany them to meetings or appointments. Students do not need to make a formal report to access these services.

  • Oxy 24/7 Confidential Hotline
The Oxy 24/7 Confidential Hotline (323-341-4141) provides around-the-clock support to students experiencing emotional distress, trauma, or mental health crises. Students can speak confidentially with a mental health professional to receive immediate emotional support, discuss their concerns, and identify additional resources or next steps.

  • Emmons Wellness Center
Emmons Wellness Center provides confidential mental health counseling and emotional support to students navigating difficult or distressing experiences. Counseling staff can help students process their experiences, develop coping strategies, and connect with additional mental health resources or ongoing care.

  • Office for Religious & Spiritual Life
The Office for Religious & Spiritual Life offers a supportive space for students seeking spiritual guidance, reflection, or assistance navigating personal challenges. Ordained clergy can provide confidential support to students of any religious or spiritual background, including those who do not identify with a particular faith tradition.

A REMINDER FOR RESPONSIBLE EMPLOYEES

All employees who do not have legally protected confidentiality are Responsible Employees. This means that faculty and staff who learn of possible sexual misconduct are required to share that information with the Civil Rights & Title IX Office. If someone shares an experience with you, you can support them by listening, sharing available resources, and promptly reporting the information to the Civil Rights & Title IX Office.

Most importantly, we want members of the Oxy community to know that support is available. Whether you are seeking resources for yourself, trying to help a friend, interested in making a report, or simply trying to understand your options, please reach out.

Sincerely,
The Civil Rights & Title IX Office
