As we announced in August, the U.S. Department of Education completed its review of the college’s compliance with the Clery Act, a federal law governing the reporting of campus crime statistics. While the review found that the College is currently in compliance with the Clery Act, it also found that the Oxy failed to meet its obligations in a number of areas during the 2009 to 2013 timeframe. We noted in our earlier message that the College faced the possibility of substantial fines, and that we would provide timely updates.

I write today to let you know we received notification of fines on Wednesday, September 27. The fines, which the DOE chose to levy on only four of the nine adverse findings against the College, total $83,000. A copy of the notification letter is available here. The College will not appeal, and will draw from reserves to pay the fines.

We are grateful to the many members of the Oxy community -- students, faculty and staff -- who over the past five years have collectively contributed to this outcome. In keeping with the Clery Act’s intent to keep the community aware of the major crimes that occur on campus, you can find the College’s 2017 Clery Report here.
