Studied German and comparative literature, as well as history and philosophy at Cologne, Constance and Madison, Wisconsin. Ph. D. at Wisconsin, 1981. From 1986 to 2015 courses and seminars at the German department and in conjunction with the English department, as well as DWA, CTSJ, and history. Long term chair of the department of German, Russian, and Classical Studies. Numerous publications on literary and cultural history and current issues in contemporary history and culture.
