Expand your horizons and build your future.
There are many ways to enhance your training as a Theater student at Occidental College, including Undergraduate Summer Research and Study Abroad. You can also deepen your experience and make connections for your post-Oxy career through summer internships. You may elect to enroll in INT100 (0-units) or INT200 (2-units and a nominal enrollment fee) while undertaking an internship but this is not required.
Available Internships and Fellowships
Edgerton Program in Theater Summer Internships
The Edgerton Foundation Program in Theater at Occidental College will support two (2) full-time Summer Internships for Summer 2020. The work expectations for Edgerton internships are approximately 10 weeks at ~40 hours per week. The study grant awards $5700.00, comparable to the Los Angeles Arts Council Internship program.
Support from the Edgerton Foundation is for:
UNPAID internships with local partner Theaters.
For summer 2020, internships with Cornerstone Theater Company will be given particular attention. Theater is collaborating with Cornerstone on the development of the Highland Park Community Project for a fall 2020 production, directed by Michael John Garces (Artistic Director of Cornerstone), as our first fall mainstage production. If interested, contact Susan Gratch for more information.
UNPAID internships at other established THEATER companies ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY.
It is not necessary to have an internship offer in hand in order to apply, though we do want to know where you have already applied or are planning to apply.
Priority will be given to applications from declared majors followed by those from declared minors. Priority will be given to applicants who have not received Edgerton support previously. Students who secure shorter internship programs may be considered for pro-rated funding if it is available after all full-time applicants have been considered.
Students who secure an internship through Oxy’s InternLA program or the LADAC are not eligible for Edgerton funding.
IMPORTANT UPDATE CONCERNING COVID-19
"Given the rapidly evolving situation with COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we anticipate a delay in posting positions for the summer of 2020. We are in the process of working with our host organizations to determine when and how they will be able to host interns in the coming months. Please check back regularly as updates will be posted in coming weeks. We remain deeply committed to providing vital employment opportunities in the arts and nonprofit sector to college students."
The originally announced date of posting internships has been delayed. You can visit the list of 2019 summer internships to get a sense of the arts organizations who are seeking interns and types of internships offered.
Applications for Summer 2020 will be posted in March.
Details of each internship differ - be sure to read the position requirements including application materials required and time commitment (days and hours per week, duration of the internship.) Check out the Tips web page as you think about applying.
