For some it means relaxing after a hard year, for others it means confronting adulthood. For me, this summer meant doing research as part of Occident College’s Undergraduate Research Center (URC). The URC provides funding for undergraduates to conduct research in their field for 10 weeks during the summer.

I’m double-majoring in computer science and cognitive science and minoring in math. On campus, I’m a co-vice president of Planned Parenthood Club. Coming to college, I knew that I wanted to study math and cognitive science, and I knew I wanted to be an activist for Planned Parenthood. Studying computer science was a total surprise.

It all started on a Saturday when my dad was in town (dads do love their early morning risings) and then on Sunday was the Los Angeles Pride/Resist March. Now, normally I would leave myself one day to sleep in, but on that particular Sunday, I woke up at 6 a.m.

Last year, I had no idea what I wanted to pursue and it was really stressing me out. I ended up taking classes in psychology, economics, marine biology, and sociology.

The Lunar New Year Celebration is one of the biggest cultural events here at Occidental. Every year around February, Asian cultural clubs collaborate to bring the most important celebration in Asia to our campus.

"Comps." You’ll hear the word floating around from every senior you might meet, often accompanied by a groan or a sad shake of the head. "Comps" is short for your capstone senior comprehensive project—every major has one, and the format for each is different. STEM majors might have a lengthy examination or a presentation on their research.

This past week, the Occidental diplomacy and world affairs department held their annual UN Week that strives to raise awareness on an issue facing the global community. This year, the DWA department chose to focus on the refugee crisis that is currently affecting over 65 million people today.
